  • Energy Grants

Receive government energy grants to help keep your home warm. The government is offering a number of different grants and schemes to help homeowners in the coming winter months.

Right now, the government is investing £12 billion in help-to-heat schemes to help make sure homes are warm and cheaper to heat in schemes such as the boiler upgrade scheme, local council delivery scheme which is also known as the sustainable warmth competition, home upgrade grant, social housing decarbonisation fund and the energy company obligation.

You can get this help from the government directly, you’ll need to approach your local authority, boiler installers, your energy company, and other bodies.

You can get immediate help to lower your energy consumption under the ‘Energy Company Obligation’. It’s a requirement for your provider to help households reduce the cost of heating their homes by fitting energy-saving measures.

Not all energy companies are offering the same level of support, so it’s best to speak to your provider and ask about what support they can offer.

You should contact your energy provider to find out if they are taking part in the scheme or speak to your local council.

The Sustainable Warmth Competition is also available to select households. Funding is awarded to the local authorities so that they can get help to upgrade poorly efficient homes of low-income households. This is only available in England.

The way local authorities deliver this is different, so it’s really worth talking to your local council to find out how they are delivering this and to find out if you’re eligible. The two types of schemes that are running are:

    1. Local Authority Delivery Phase 3 (LAD3) scheme for low-income homes heated by mains gas.
    2. Home upgrade grants phase 1 (HUG!) scheme for low-income households off the gas grid (i.e., homes that are heated by electricity).
  • Saving Energy

You could get help from the government to find ways to save energy in your home.

If you want to save energy, the government will make recommendations on home improvements that you can make in order to make your home more energy efficient. It’s all about saving energy and reducing the cost of your bills. You don’t want to be in a position where you’re struggling to pay your bills. Imagine the stress of being in debt with gas and electricity suppliers. You want to avoid that as much as you can.

Within these recommendations, you can see an estimated cost of the improvement, the project savings forecast, and the next steps you’d need to take if you want to make the improvements.

This is a really good way of finding out what more you could do to make your home as energy efficient as possible which will save you money in the long run and could add to the value of your property should you decide to sell.

There’s different advice for Scotland and Northern Ireland, so make sure you read the information carefully on the government website.

If you want to take up the governments offer, the first thing you need to do is gather the following information:

    • The type of property it is (e.g., flat, house or maisonette)
    • When it was built or a rough idea
    • Whether or not your home is insulated and giving details about what parts of your home are
    • Describing the type of glazing you have installed for example single, double or triple glazed windows.

When you are filling out the details on the government website, it can help if your home has an EPC or Energy Performance Certificate.

Head over to the government website to get started and search for ‘improve energy efficiency’.
